Ooh, interesting table. I work 3 or 4 days a week, and I take at least 6 weeks vaction, so I work 46 weeks a year. So, 1100 to 1450 hours a year. Pretty cush. I spend nearly as much time on hobbies and volunteering as on work.

I've generally heard 2000 hours a year as standard for American professionals.

I try *not* to make a distinction between work and self-actualization, since I fear it makes a rift in my life - how could I spend over a thousand hours a year at activity that's somehow "not me"? And wouldn't that attitude make it easier to behave unethically at work, even if I think I'm an ethical person?

That said, I often make the distinction anyway, but I'm trying to integrate it all.

Yeah, the Red Light District is a tourist attraction, they keep it pretty clean. If you'd gone to a sex show you wouldn't have come out feeling any more seedily genuine: it's just live porn, and the audience is full of Japanese tourists.

"It's hard to realize how tense it is to live in a security state when it comes about so gradually." -- amen, brother. It's one of the many reasons that I, too, fantasize about moving to Amsterdam every time I go there.

Once when my mother & I were riding an auto-rickshaw through Poona, our driver had to maneuver around a herd of water buffalo who were being driven up the street. One buffalo got its horn stuck inside our rickshaw & nearly speared Mom's thigh before the driver kicked it in the head & convinced it to change course.

In Delhi I used to see camels dragging I-beams through the streets -- the construction crew would attach a wheel to one end of the beam, and attach the other to the camel's hump. Quite effective. As India develops, explosively, the practice appears to have disappeared -- I didn't see any camels in the streets last year. Have you?

I went to a very progressive leftist school when I was 15 and living in Pune -- we had "sex ed", virtually unknown in India. To familiarize us with condoms, the teacher passed out some that the Indian govt. had issued. They were exactly what you'd expect: dry, flimsy, cracked.

The teacher also wanted us to get used to touching each other. He had us stand in a conga line, alternating boys & girls, each of us putting our hands on the shoulders in front of us. I'm not clear what he was trying to accomplish. I do know that, barring siblings, these teenage boys & girls had hardly ever touched each other, even on the shoulders. I was the only white student -- I wanted to disappear.

I asked the teacher, privately, if India had much of an HIV problem. He said the only HIV-positive people in India were a few dozen foreign homosexuals, held in hospitals in Bombay and Delhi.

It's huge and quiet and cool. You're not allowed to speak inside.

Second, go to Dilli Haat, a market ("haat") that's also called "Craft Village". You pay a few cents to get in, which means that once you're in there's no beggars. If you're into shopping, it's a little pricey, but the best quality and lowest stress anywhere in the city. An excellent food court with dozens of stalls. It's like an earthy, classy Indian mall, and if you're serious about buying anything authentic or beautiful, or you just want a quiet afternoon or evening, this is the place.
